Empowerment Self-Defense Instructor Information
We work with an exclusive team of instructors who believe that self-defense is about much more than physical strikes, and are committed to helping others access their own power. We work in teams of “Whistle Instructors” who are primarily responsible for coaching, and “Suited Instructors” who are responsible for playing the role of mock assailants in class.
These positions involve facilitating embodied, movement-based educational programming with youth and adults. Programs typically range from 1 to 5 hours. Programs are structured with a mix of instruction, discussion, demonstration, and interactive activities, and include opportunities for pacing, breaks, and role variation.
Specific Physical Demands for ESD Instructors:
While performing the essential functions of this role, the instructor may be required to:
– Use hands and arms to hold instructional equipment (including padded mitts), demonstrate movements, and engage in interactive activities
– Hold padded targets and absorb repeated, controlled strikes while maintaining safe positioning
– Reach, bend, stoop, kneel, balance, and climb stairs as needed in varied program environments
– Occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull equipment weighing up to 50 pounds (e.g., mats, pads, or protective gear)
Additional Qualifications and Physical Demands for Suited Instructors:
– Teach a physically demanding curriculum while wearing approximately 20 pounds of body armor and, while wearing the armor, sustain full-force strikes to the head and groin area
– Play the role of primarily male assailants in simulated assault scenarios
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
